Mr Abuga Makori, a renowned media practitioner, had to hastily take off from Nyamira after getting clue on his impending arrest over alleged character assassination and defamation.

"I had briefly visited the county on Tuesday only to learn about impending arrest. I had to hastily take off from the county but I am safe wherever I am. There is no need to worry.

"On Monday, I received a call from one Mr Munga, who introduced himself as Deputy DCIO but he did not specify why he wanted me to report to the station. That's why I dishonoured the summons because they were not official," he said on phone call.

Police records in Nyamira shows that he is facing character assassination charges and defamation following complaints launched by two top county officials.

DCIO Millicent Ochuka contends that it's not the second time Mr Makori has disowned police summons over complaints of his 'defamatory' articles on social media.

"He was only reported but hasn't surrendered. He is currently facing several charges but has never bothered to show up. We only managed to get hold of him early this year but the complainant dropped the case," she said.

Preliminary investigations show that two officials; Joash Gisore, a political advisor to Governor John Nyagarama and one Pastor Monyoro are accusing the journalist over the aforementioned claims.

But in his own account, Mr Makori, who recently launched his senatorial bid, says the two officials are 'notorious' of misleading the governor and he's ready to face a civil suit from them.

"The allegations are civil. They should not use the police to intimidate me. Let them just go to court. I have documents showing how they have used closeness with the governor to commit economic crimes besides influencing employment of relatives."

Last week, Mr Makori was attacked by a stranger at Keiko Hotel in the middle of the night and the matter is still active at Kisii Police Station.

"We cannot establish the motive of the attack until the perpetrator has recovered. The matter is still under investigation," said Kisii OCS Mr B. Kimwele.
