The match was played at the Wembley Stadium, with the Kenyan Captain replacing Frenchman Moussa Sissoko in the 93rd minute.

Son Hueng-Min, Jan Vertonghen and Fernando Llorente scored for Spurs in the 47th, 83rd and 86th minute to keep Spurs Champions League glory dream alive.

Spurs Argentine Coach Mauricio Pochettino used the 3-4-1-2 formation with Hugo Lloris starting in goal, David Sanchez, Juan Foyth and Toby Alderweireld in defence, Vertonghen and Serge Aurier on the flanks, Harry Winks, Sissoko and Christian Eriksen in the middle, while Son and Brazilian Lucas Moura stared upfront.

The win puts Spurs in the driving seat of the two-legged match, ahead of the teams’ second meeting in Germany on March 05, 2019.

Wanyama’s side only needs a draw in the second leg to advance to the quarterfinals. Victor Wanyama continues to find his footing in Spurs side this year, after suffering and nursing various injuries last year.

He is expected to lead Harambee Stars during the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, in June.

In another match, defending Champions Real Madrid beat Ajax 2-1.
