The Mombasa County Peace Committees, the Senator of Mombasa Mohamed Fakii, Mvita MP Abdulswamad Sharif Nassir and the HAKI Africa rights group have strongly condemned the killing of Mohamed Mwatsau (alias Jirongo) by armed criminal gangs in Kagujo-Barsheba, Kisauni Sub-County.

It is reported that eight youth armed with pangas and knives descended on Mr Mwatsau on Saturday at his home and injured him seriously before being rushed to the hospital where he succumbed to the injuries.

The leaders said Mwatsau was a law abiding citizen who worked closely with community and security authorities to promote peace and cohesion in Kisauni and Mombasa in general.

"His demise is a big blow to peace all over the county. We wish to state that we fully support the fight against crime in Mombasa and we urge that it be done strictly within the confines of the law," said the leaders.

Addressing the press in a joint statement, the leaders appealed to the police, particularly the Mombasa County Commander Johnson Ipara, to pursue the attackers of the deceased and ensure they are arrested and charged in court.

They said "No person, youth or aged, should be allowed to get away with acts of violence and murder such as the one witnessed in the past week."
