Residents of Chinunda village in Kiabonyoru, Borabu Sub County in Nyamira County are living in fear after suspected witches abandoned a coffin near Keera river on Wednesday morning.
It is alleged that the coffin was used to bury a young girl who was buried on Tuesday at Enchoro village in Mosobeti.
Mochumbe Moronya, the grandfather to the deceased confirmed that the coffin abandoned was the one his granddaughter was buried in.
"It is shocking that the same coffin we used to bury the deceased is the same that was found abandoned near the river. Her body is missing a clear indication that the witches fed on her body," he said.
Mr Moronya said witchcraft is rampant in the area.
He said near the coffin, a book was found written the name of those people who are practicing witchcraft.
Area police boss Michael Lesmum said it was a shocking incident which has never happened before in the area.
"We have learnt with shock that the witches abandoned the coffin without the body inside. It is high time people should stop practicing witchcraft," he said.
