Speaking during a presser held at Wiper's offices on Thursday, Kalonzo said he was happy with the outcome of the exercise but admitted that he had kept money that did not belong to him.

He said that someone, whose identity he didn’t reveal gave him Sh200,000 to ensure that Mawathe emerges the winner of the exercise but he never gave him the amount.

He said that he decided to keep the money because he did not meet Mawathe on that day because he was busy.

"In fact, I have just made a confession. On the voting day itself, someone brought Sh 200,000 to ensure Mawathe won.

“Mawathe was up and down at the polling stations, so I decided to use the money to buy seeds," he said.

Mawathe, who contested on Wiper ticket, won the contest after bagging 21,628 votes defeating ODM’s Irshad Sumra who garnered 7,988 votes.

The loss of ODM was compounded after its candidate Chris Karan was also floored in the Ugenya by-election.

The two losses saw ODM withdraw from the Wajir by-election, a move which has continued to elicit mixed reactions from various quarters.
