Months after 1992 polls, he noted, opposition Ford Kenya constituted a secret shadow cabinet without President Daniel Moi's knowledge.

Speaking at Henry Obwocha's funeral on Friday, the ODM leader recounted how Orengo acted as Attorney General, a position then held by Amos Wako.

"Then after losing to Moi, we had to craft the way we could handle things as a government.

"James Orengo was appointed Attorney General, Paul Muite Chief Justice, Henry Obwocha Minister for Finance and Anyang' Nyong'o as minister for planning," recalled Raila, then all as Young Turks of Ford Kenya.

While Raila's father Jaramogi Oginga Odinga remained the details facto opposition leader, Raila was appointed shadow minister for Local Government.

Later in 1997 in what is famously called IPPG, Moi ceded power and allowed opposition to have Shadow Cabinet for the sake of checks and balances.

Orengo became in 2017 the first African lawyer to win a Presidential election petition at the Supreme Court when he represented Raila Odinga.

In April, he spearheaded a coup that saw Moses Wetangula toppled as Senate Minority Leader, a position he holds until now.
