Despite their unexpected handshake recently, dialogue between Raila Odinga and President Uhuru Kenyatta started way in 2013, reveals veteran journalist John Onyando.

With the Supreme Court having upheld Uhuru's victory in 2013, a determined Raila would make things difficult for the President.

Even having withdrawn Raila's security detail, Uhuru was yearning to meet the former Prime Minister for some sought of dialogue.

"They happened to be in Kampala by sheer coincidence. Uhuru was attending the AU peacekeeping mission in Somalia while Raila was invited by Kabaka Ronald Mutebi II.

"At some point, they found themselves in the same hotel. Uhuru saw Raila and walked to him. The President asked him whether they could have a meeting that evening which Raila agreed," he says.

During the meeting, Onyando says, Uhuru was a bit relaxed and explained to Raila that things were not working back home.

In the August 2013 meeting, Raila also raised his frustrations among them Jubilee's non-commitment to reforms. 

When they returned home, Raila asked ODM Members of Parliament to treat Uhuru with courtesy when he visited their constituencies.
