Angry residents of Irungu village, Bogeka in Kiamokama Nyaribari Masaba Kisii County on Saturday evening burnt to death a 40-year-old man who allegedly raped a 3-year-old minor.
Confirming the incident, area chief Ratemo Manoti said the deceased Matundura Keronyo hailed from Bomasicho village.
"Keronyo lured the minor into his house on Friday evening where he defiled her. The minor's mother Rebecca Onyancha mobilized residents to search for the victim when she failed to return home only to find the suspect escorting her," he said.
Mr Manoti said the suspect was forced to run for his life when he met with residents who were searching for the minor.
"He abandoned the minor and escaped into a nearby bush. Angry residents launched a manhunt for the suspect until Saturday at around 4:50 pm when they found him at a chang'aa den consuming chang'aa. They frog-marched him before they set him on fire," said the chief.
The chief said police officers moved the body to Gucha hospital morgue in Keroka.
He appealed to members of the public not to take the law into their hands saying that crime suspects should be surrendered to authorities.
