Led by Bishop Joseph Mutungi, the residents said that the water has become unfit for domestic consumption.

Mutungi noted that the water in the river has turned murky due to pollution from Nairobi.

"Downstream people are really suffering. The river has been polluted and has turned green and some parts black due to the chemicals thus not consumable," said Mutungi.

He observed that the county and national governments ought to find solution to the pollution because residents have really been suffering.

"We beseech our county government and the national one through the Ministry of Water to find a way of controlling the pollution upstream of river Athi by industries from Nairobi," he said.

According to the Bishop, some animals died and others developed illnesses after drinking the water.

He said that there is need for an immediate intervention before outbreak of diseases .

Mutungi spoke on Friday at Kibauni during a function where Kibauni CBO received Sh600,000  from Machakos ACK church meant for the construction of two sand dams.

The sand dams will benefit six villages and lessen water problems experienced in the area.
