The Kisumu trip was to formally feature only ODM leader Raila Odinga and President Uhuru Kenyatta as part of good gesture after reconciliation.

As the two protagonists head to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology, Mr Ruto will grace 6th graduation of Kisii University, not far away from Siaya.

A source who spoke in confidence says the DP was prevailed upon by leaders from both Nyamira and Kisii to attend the event, in a region located at Raila's home turf.

"It wasn't in the itinerary but Gusii leaders prevailed upon him. Since the other principals will still be in Nyanza, it was prudent for him to also stay around.

"The idea was precipitated by Governors John Nyagarama and  James Ongwae when they met him at Kisumu on Thursday. He will land at around 10:30am," he said.

The DP pulled a surprise when he was first to land at Kisumu International Airport, contrary to expectations of ODM leaders since he wasn't featuring in the itinerary.

Friday's trip to Gusii will be the 12th in as many months as the DP increases momentum in the hunt for over 1 million votes from the populated region.

A fortnight ago, he visited Nyamira County before returning to Kisii a week later in a move that angered ODM grassroot leaders from the region.
