Months after President Uhuru Kenyatta's trip to Gusii region, a section of Nyamira leaders have explained why they snubbed the Head of State despite invitation by organisers.
The president visited Kisii County where he held leaders meeting at Kisii School, which also saw a few leaders from Nyamira County attending.
But Borabu MP Ben Momanyi on Sunday said the decision by a number of them to boycott the trip was genuine, adding that Nyamira is not a Sub County of Kisii thus needed it's independence.
"It's worrying that every time the president is coming, he has to pass through Kisii. We are not a Sub County. As Nyamira, we need our independence. If such a trip is again organised, let it strictly be about Nyamira," he told mourners on Sunday at Ekerenyo.
He added: "As a county, the president should directly engage us. We have our issues that can be solved without necessarily engaging Kisii. Next time, let the president call only leaders from Nyamira."
In January, Uhuru postponed a joint trip to the two counties, only to settle on Kisii later on, a move that rattled Nyamira leaders. Only Senator Okong'o Mogeni and Governor John Nyagarama attended the Kisii meeting.
West Mugirango MP Vincent Kemosi on Sunday insisted his decision to boycott Uhuru's Kisii trip was long over due, accusing Kisii leaders of undermining those from Nyamira.
"I will not attend such trips even if they happen tomorrow. We must respect the fact that Nyamira is a county. We are capable of doing things without involving Kisii."
