An old Kikuyu adage says, 'Mathanwa mari kiondo kimwe matiagaga gukong'onariana' (Two axes put in one basket won't fail to hit on each other).

It, therefore, goes without saying that two or more people living under one roof will not fail to squabble from time to time over this or that other issue. Not even couples who are brought together by the power of love are spared from this.

For instance, among Kikuyu couples, there are these four things that almost every couple will often fight about and can even escalate to a bitter rivalry if the couple involved doesn't do anything about it. Let's outline them below.

1. Food

It is often said that the way to a man's heart, is through his stomach and this is not an exception when it comes to Kikuyu men. In fact, in the Kikuyu traditional culture, a wife who could not prepare certain meals for her husband would be taken back to her mother to teach her how to cook those meals.

Basically, a hungry man is an angry man. Similarly, a man who cannot provide any food to his family has no business asking the same from his wife. Some men will, however, hear none of this leading to endless fights.

2. Phone

The fights emanating from phone usage among Kikuyu couples is so widespread that John De'Matthew, a popular Kikuyu secular musician, composed the song, 'Munguriu' (phone) over the same.

There is a notion among men for example, that they ought to know everything that their wives do with their phones but wives should not poke their noses in their husbands' phones. This rule typical of 'Shamba La Wanyama' rules doesn't augur well with many women leading to squabbles.

3. Hygiene

There is nothing that pisses off a Kikuyu husband like an unhygienic wife. Personal and household hygiene is an unwritten rule in many Kikuyu households. A woman who cannot comply with this simple rule cannot avoid constant squabbles with her husband.

4. Livestock

Animals in many Kikuyu households are mostly owned by men as it is a sign of their wealth. Therefore, they will expect the animals to be well taken care of by the whole family led by the wife. Doing otherwise can only mean endless fights.
