Duale said most employees from Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Marsabit, Isiolo, Samburu and Turkana counties have questionable academic qualifications.

Speaking at Garissa Primary School on Saturday during the Pastoral Education and Career Fair, Duale said counties in the arid and semi-arid regions are employing staff with fake academic certificates at the expense of those with university degrees.

The Garissa Township MP has asked the Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (EACC) to investigate the counties for giving jobs to individuals with no qualifications.

“Hundreds of young women and men with genuine papers don’t have jobs because counties in North Eastern are unfairly hiring staff with fake academic certificates,” he said.

During the event, Duale urged young people to take up jobs that require technical skills instead of looking for elusive white collar jobs so that they can be self-reliant.

“Young people in the county are not being too keen on technical jobs or joining vocational training. I urge them to take up jobs that require technical skills,” he added.

Leaders in Garissa County have in the past complained that technical institutions in the county have very few students despite the county government making the courses free.
