And even before the crackdown commenced, Matiang'i named Kelson Lianga alias Kevin Lianga, a convict, as the man behind the deadly gang that has given locals sleepless nights.

Dr Matiang'i urged criminals to voluntarily surrender, adding that those caught will not be spared by security officers. Already, a contingent of GSU officers have been deployed.

"Dr.@FredMatiangi toured Matungu area, Kakamega, where he announced that a contingent of GSU troops has been deployed to handle the recent profound deterioration of security in the region. He warned perpetrators to voluntarily surrender because they will eventually be smoked out," Interior ministry said.

Several people have been hacked to death by unknown assailants with locals accusing certain politicians of orchastrating violence to the detriment of local community.

On Wednesday, Lianga, who was convicted in absentia 20 years ago, was arrested by police in Nairobi's Kawangware suburbs. He could be charged with Matungu murders.

“He was arrested, taken to court, tried and convicted (in absentia) to 20 years after failing to attend court on judgement day,” said DCI through Twitter.

"On 26th February and 10th April 2019, the suspect was connected in a series of violent robberies & organized crimes including one in which a 14-Year-old girl was defiled. The suspect is directly linked to all these crimes and has been at large ever since he failed to attend court," added DCI.
