They have been in the limelight for the wrong reasons in the past such as fighting the government of Kenya on some health programmes like immunization against polio among others.

The sect maintains that they believe in divine healing as prescribed in the bible.

"We stand with what is not shared by most other bible_believing Christians and it cannot be compromised at any cost," says Peter Muluvi one of the Kavonokya sect member.

Kavonokya members have severally found themselves in problems with the government over their hardline stands such as failing to go to the hospital or taking their ailing children to a health facility.

They believe in the power of prayer, which more often than not, does not heal sect members who are ailing.

The sect's elder David Mathuva says prosecution for some of the members on account of neglecting sick children would not change their belief.

"We shall abide by the sect's beliefs come rain or shine. Forceful hospitalization of our children will not change our resolve," said Mathuva.

On December 2, 2013, a woman who is a member of the Kavonokya sect was forced to take her child for polio immunization.

The woman said that "I can't take the child to hospital for immunization since the minor will be defiled by modern medication that is contrary to the Kavonokya church teachings".

After the minor was immunized, the whole village went into a frenzy, other women hid their children in granaries and bushes to keep them from modern medicine "defilement".

It's not only minors but the members don't go for treatment too. They pray to be healed.

Another of their members only identified as Mutuku had an accident along Mombasa road in .2016 and he suffered a fracture on his leg.

What's surprising is that he did not go to the hospital; he stayed at home with the hope his broken leg would get fixed through prayers.

He just went home to relax and wait for God to fix his broken leg.

Neighbours say that they took the man to the hospital after they noticed that his leg was rotting.

Kavonokya religion has been attacked by different leaders who have called for it total overhaul given it has "babaric" and "backward" doctrines.

Many have lost their lives including children because of these beliefs.
