According to Inspector Julius Wanjau who is leading the multi-agency team, the demolition exercise took a one week break to completely flatten the structures it had demolished earlier.

In an interview with journalists on Monday, Wanjau said that owners of buildings set to be demolished have been issued with notices.

“We are resuming work this week with more buildings in Westlands, Langata, Nairobi CBD and Eastlands that sit on riparian land set to be demolished,” he said.

He stated that the exercise is unstoppable because it has President Uhuru Kenyatta’s blessings.

Mr Wanjau dismissed claims that tenants are not being notified adding that some people want to politicize the exercise.

“We are working within the confines of law and our first priority is tenants whom we have given notices spanning two weeks and above,” he said.

Last week, the multi-agency team issued a two weeks notice to occupants of Taj Mall/Air-Gate center to vacate.

The tenants have until August 30 to vacate the building.

Nairobi governor Mike Sonko says that over 400 buildings including his property in Buruburu will be demolished.

The governor also said that Weston Hotel associated with Deputy President William Ruto will be brought down if it is found to be on riparian land.

President  Kenyatta has publicly said that he has lost many friends as result of these demolitions, which he says will continue nevertheless.
