Uhuru spoke amid a wave of desperation among Kenyans after the government effected the 16 percent VAT on all petroleum products on September 1.

“It is my responsibility to put Kenyans first, those living today, and your children, who will inherit the country tomorrow. That means I must balance between short-term pain and long-term gain. We have a country to transform, and we must make bold decisions to achieve our vision," he tweeted.

Much to the reprieve of Kenyans, Uhuru proposed the reduction of the VAT imposed on fuel from the current 16 percent to 8 percent.

He noted that he was aware that the country needs to grow but it will only grow if its citizens are only taxed what they are able to pay.

However, minutes after Uhuru's tweet, Kenyans on Twitter (KOT) seized this opportunity to convey their miseries on various issues.
