Charles Njonjo is among veteran politicians and state officers in the country.
Njonjo was born in 1920 and raised in Kabete, Kiambu country.
A lawyer by profession, Njonjo has held top prestigious positions in the country.
Here are top positions the veteran lawyer and politician once held.
1. Legal clerk
After graduating with a Bachelors Degree in Law from Fort Hare University in South Africa in 1955, Njonjo returned to the country and was appointed as a legal clerk in the colonial government.
2. Counsel
In 1961 Njonjo served as counsel in the British colonial government.
He doubled up as the Supreme Court assistant registrar.
In 1962, the veteran politician was appointed as the Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions.
He held the position to 1963 when he was appointed as the first black Attorney General (AG).
3. Attorney general
Njonjo was the first African to be appointed AG in the post-independence Kenya.
He served as AG until 1979 when he resigned to join politics.
4. Kikuyu MP
Njonjo joined active politics and become Kikuyu MP in 1980.
5. Constitutional Affairs Minister
He was appointed Constitutional Affairs Minister by retired president Daniel Arap Moi in 1980.
He held the ministerial position until 1983 when he was forced to resign in after a judicial inquiry concluded that he had allegedly abused his office when he served as AG.
It is believed that Njonjo was forced to resign after his name was allegedly featured in the 1982 attempted coup.
Njonjo’s name was however cleared by a commission that investigated the attempted coup.
After being forced to resign, Njonjo concentrated on building his business empire.
