Mr Odinga, a renowned capitalist, is often opposed to such social functions and at times he scolds people participating in fundraisers which he says promotes corruption and theft.

During the event, Odinga called for unity of purpose besides pushing for an all inclusive government which he insisted would give opportunities for all Kenyans.

"An all inclusive nation where our diversity as a people is embraced coupled with tolerance and equal opportunity for all should be our collective goal. Thank you Reer Wajir for the warm welcome during the visit to your County," he said.

According to Ms Gedi, a total of Sh60 million was raised in the event. The money will be used in construction of a mosque while some will be used in empowerment of women.

"Today, I hosted delegation led by the Right Honorable @RailaOdinga and Governor @HassanAliJoho for a fundraiser in aid of Al Fatah Islamic Institute. We collected sh 60m.I also launched NITA program where 200 youths across the county will acquire industrial training," she said

On social media, a number of Kenyans lauded Mr Odinga, with some notably being sarcastic of him. Nation Journalist Nyambega Gisesa seemed shocked by Odinga's kindness.

"Baba Raila Odinga today has given a donation of Sh1.2 million in Wajir fundraiser...," he wrote on Facebook.

Another user, Samson Omosa added: "If you see Baba giving Sh1.2 million, then we are all encouraged to give. When Baba's wallet opens, his children get excited."

Mr Odinga was accompanied by among others, Governor Ali Joho, Junet Mohammed, MP Moses Kuria and 15 other leaders from Nothern Frontier Districts.
