Sundays in Nairobi are always a lackluster affair as residents walk from church, beer joints, trenches and where-have-you-not back to the places they call home.

It is a day they repent their sins to God, to the devil, to their government, and to themselves so that they do not carry the misdeeds of this week into the next; and so the walk is slow and remorseful.

But not this Sunday. Not when the Mashemeji Derby is here with us.

When Mashemejis are playing in town, sins will always have to find another time to be forgiven.

It is a time to throw away all the pretenses of civilisation and be yourself. Otherwise where else does a young girl of 40 find the audacity to sit on top of a moving bus and shout insults at the grandfathers of her neighbour who by coincidence supports the opposite team!

This season's meeting at Kasarani is expected to gather most of Nairobi fans who form the bulk of the duo's active fanbase.

With all their previous league matches played outside Nairobi this season, today's derby will be the only offer for children of the Nairobi peasants. Afterall, the ticket costs only Sh200 and fare to the venue can be the most laughable thing when there is the fan madness to walk to the stadium in song and dance.

Both teams will meet in the CBD. Ingwe will assemble at the Kencom station while K'Ogalo will be right opposite them at the National Archives.

What is funny about the fans is that both will enjoy the company of each other and touch each other's ears and noses. Until they reach the stadium and the referee blows the whistle.

Tension. Rivalry!

Being their 83rd meeting since Earth was created, Ingwe approach the fixture with a record 27 wins against K'Ogalo who have 24 derby wins to their name. The rest have been draws.

However, the Green Army will boast of having not lost to the hooped animal in all their last six league fixtures.

Gor Mahia just came from a triumphant 4-0 win over Tanzanian giants Yanga FC in a midweek CAF match at the same venue and this will be a morale booster to add to the fact that they have not lost a single match in the league this season.

Ingwe, however, comes from a frustrating home draw against Mombasa-based side Bandari and they will hope that their new signing Alex Orotamal discovers his scoring boots.

Gor Mahia currently top the league with 49 points after playing 19 games while their hosts have only 36 points after playing three matches more.

But these are just stats. The millions who will be yelling from the stands and different villages across the country do not mind the history and statistics. All they want is the match ahead of them. They want a win.

And so for 90 minutes there will arise a yelling spree from the land of Kenya. Tense 90 minutes of adrenalin as men in shorts run behind an inflated hide to make their followers happy.

Let us meet at Kasarani.

May this team beat that one!
