In a passionate appeal at Kemera market on Saturday, Ruto insisted that Raila had taught him a lot despite going separate ways in 2013.

He said: "Baba (Raila) is my friend and we have worked together before. He means well for this nation and both Jubilee and ODM leaders should respect him. Oppose him at your own risk."

The DP insisted that the handshake should be embraced by local leaders, adding that it's only way to tone down political temperatures.

Mr Ruto, who toured the region for the second time within four months, urged local politicians to embrace peace and development.

"If Raila can work with us, who are you to oppose him? It's time now we value politics of development rather than hatred."

For the past decade, Nyamira had always voted for Raila, but Ruto is determined to sway the region in his own favour.
