A section of leaders from Ukambani region has also weighed in on the matter.

Some of the leaders want the tax imposed on fuel scrapped with immediate effect.

The president said the decision to increase the tax on fuel was reached in a bid to stir economic development in the country during his tenure in office.

"All these we have done without substantial increases in taxes over time [but] we have to pay for the new constitutional order and the public services Kenyans depend on. These cost money,” Kenyatta said.

In an unexpected twist of events, ex-Prime Minister Raila Odinga and former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka have backed the head of state's move.

However, it is clear that all is not well in Ukambani.

Some of the Ukambani MPs have vowed not to look back until the decision is reversed.

They include:

1. Charles Kilonzo (Yatta)

2. Dan Maanzo (Makueni)

 3. Robert Mbui (Kathiani)

4. Makali Mulu (Kitui Central)

5. Thaddeus Zambia (Kilome)

6. Stephen Mule (Matungulu)

7. Paul Nzengu (Mwingi North)
