The Kikuyu Council of Elders wants Deputy President William Ruto not to contest the 2022 presidential elections but to retire alongside President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Speaking to the media last week, the elders contended that the DP was part of the presidency and it was only proper if he went into retirement after the end of the Uhuru administration.

The shocker has sparked a bewildering array of reactions.

''I saw this coming before it came. You can take this to the bank; he will not garner significant support from the Mount Kenya region,'' Halima Dano.

''The opinion of the Council of Elders will not prevent Ruto from being elected. It is the people who will elect a president and not some elders,'' Abdi Karim opined.

''Ruto was given a pledge by the people of the mountain. I don't think that they will renege on that pledge beacuse their council of elders have directed them to do so,'' Sadic Mohamed said.

''This is just a confirmation of history,'' Baro Abdilatif.
