A section of locals in Eldoret town whose land is within the proposed southern bypass multi-billion project has demanded that the National Lands Commision (NLC) hastens the processing and payment of their compensation.
Addressing the press at the Catholic Cathedral grounds in Eldoret on Tuesday, the locals led by Levi Boit issued NLC with a 14-day ultimatum to pay the compensation.
They warned that at the end of the 14 days, they will stage a demonstration that will paralyze the already ongoing construction works for the bypass.
"We are really disappointed with the NLC, despite the president directing them to pay us one year down the line we have not been paid. Why are they playing cat and mouse games yet they are using our farms to construct the bypass, we are reading malice in this delay," said Boit.
"What we need is our money to be paid in the 14 days ultimatum failure to which they will have to renegotiate with us and pay the compensation according to the current land price and not what we had agreed earlier," he added.
The locals further hit out at the elected leaders in the area for failing to address the issue and instead only focus on the 2022 politics.
President Uhuru Kenyatta commissioned the construction of the 32.9 kilometres bypass in 2017 and all land and property owners that would be affected by the project were expected to be compensated by the government.
