Alai labelled the father of Ali Salim Gichunge an 'irresponsible parent' after details emerged he had not seen his son since 2015, and did not know where he was for a period of four years.

Gichunge is believed to have left his home county of Isiolo in 2015 and it is reported that he lost contact with his father, Abdala Salim, a sergeant with the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).

"So this guy is a KDF officer but he last saw his son in 2015 and never took action to understand where he was or what he was doing? Do people know the meaning of “security starts with you?” This is a big failure in parenting," Alai said in a tweet.

Gichunge together with his wife Violet Kemunto had been staying at a rented house in Mucatha, Kiambu County since March, last year.

Neighbours at Guango Estate in Ruaka described Kemunto, who has a Journalism and Public Relations degree from Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), as a quiet woman who liked to smile.

Gichunge, on the other hand, was described as an outspoken man who always greeted his neighbours.

Police on Friday told a local daily that Gichunge had been arrested although it had earlier been reported he had been killed during the operation to flush out terrorists from DusitD2 hotel.

“He is in custody, there must have been confusion (that he had been killed) because his vehicle was at the scene,” detectives said.
