Amid all the fanfare and clouds of expectations that come with the former powerful man in the world being in his ancestral village, his grandmother Mama Sarah Obama is running a foundation that seeks to uplift the livelihoods of widows and orphans in Siaya County.

Sarah Obama is the patron of Safeguard Widows and Orphans Foundation (SOWO).

The foundation has partnered with various organizations to uplift the living standards of widows and orphans in Siaya, among them online business company, Uber.

Addressing the press on Sunday in Kogelo ahead of Obama’s tour, Uber Project Manager Mr. Anthony Opondo said that out of the 6,000 driving job opportunities created by Uber in the country, only 250 drivers are women.

He said Uber is set to train 300 women in Siaya to become drivers and entrepreneurs through a project called women empowerment fund program.

“The beneficiaries of the project will also get financial literacy training where they will be able to access financing of car loans so that they can become entrepreneurs,” said Mr Opondo.
