The push for constitutional amendments is not only ill-driven but also ill-timed, Amani National Congress (ANC) leader Musalia Mudavadi has said.

Speaking on Sunday after a service at House of Grace along Lang’ata Road in Nairobi, Mudavadi questioned the capacity of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to oversee the process.

He noted that Kenyans lack confidence in the electoral, which makes it hard to conduct a fair process. He also reminded leaders to think of better things they can do to transform the lives of Kenyans instead of traversing the country in the name of a change in the law.

“Are we satisfied that the IEBC as currently constituted is able to conduct a referendum that will genuinely reflect the wishes of the people of Kenya?” he posed.

According to Mudavadi, 80% of Kenyans should back the idea of reviewing the current constitution. He noted that most Kenyans want leaders to deliver on their promises and not take them back to the ballot box.

He also urged leaders to talk about the choking public debt the nation is facing before talking about amendments in the constitution before 2022.

Among the key issues in the push for reforms include the creation of the post of Prime Minister, an extension of Presidential term and scrapping some of the posts in government including Women represent seat.

Former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga-led party team feels a referendum is the beginning of solving Kenya’s problems in future.
