The nation was engulfed in grief after citizens learned that the first president was no more. 

The death of Kenyatta marked the beginning of the Nyayo after retired President Daniel Moi took over the leadership of this nation. 

Voice of Kenya veteran broadcasters Nobert Okare and Hassan Mazoa at exactly 3 pm, went on air to announce the death of Mzee, who was on holiday in Mombasa. 

The two announced that the first prime minister of Kenya had passed on while in sleep at the Coastal city. Moi and Head of Public Service Geoffrey Kariithi were tasked to work for a smooth transition following the death of Mzee. 

The Guardian announced the death of Kenyatta and compared him to other heroic leaders in the nation including ‘‘His name will be remembered along with that of Kwame Nkrumah (Ghana), Patrice Lumumba (Democratic Republic of Congo) and Abdel Nasser (Egypt).”

Kenyatta is remembered for his fight towards gaining independence. He led other freedom fighters to ensure Kenya was a free nation from the colonialist.
