Police officers at the Central police station in Eldoret town were on Monday treated to a rare spectacle after detainees at the station decided to smear human faeces on their cells.

Reports indicate that the detainees opted for the bizarre action as a way of protesting delays by the police to formally charge them before a court of law.

Legally, the police hold suspects at their cells before being arraigned within 24 hours of their arrest after which they are remanded or released on bail pending the hearing of their cases.

Eldoret West OCPD Zachary Bitok could however not be reached for a comment over the incident.

Later the police sought for cleaning services from the county fire department.

“We were called that there were some detainees at this police station who had smeared faeces on the cell walls. Since we usually work together as a unit with the police we went and cleaned them and ensured that everything was in order,” Kibet Kurgat an officer with the fire department at the county government of Uasin Gishu told journalists outside the police station.

The incident has already attracted the attention of some social media users.
