Addressing the press in Mtwapa, Kilifi county on Monday, Wetangula announced his exit from the opposition's National Super Alliance (NASA), citing betrayal from the coalition chief Raila Odinga.

However, speaking on Radio Jambo on Tuesday evening, Sakaja laughed off the move, saying that it is most likely as a result of Odinga's exclusion of his NASA co-principals in his March 9 reconciliation with President Uhuru Kenyatta.

He accused the Ford-Kenya party leader of opposing national progress, bashing him for going against an initiative aimed at promoting peace and calm, at a time when the nation was grappling with political division after the disputed elections.

"Unawezaje sema umesalitiwa eti kwa sababu mwenzako ameenda kutafutia nchi amani? (how can one claim to have been betrayed simply because their colleague went out in pursuit of national peace?" wondered the lawmaker.

He noted that the former Prime Minister was right to not alert his colleagues within the alliance of his meeting with President Kenyatta, noting that his position at the helm of the bloc entitles him to the same.

"Raila ndiye kiongozi was NASA na alikuwa na haki ya kukutana na rais. Wetangula lazima akubali kuongozwa, la sivyo pia yeye hataweza kuongoza (Raila is the alliance leader and made the right move)," he added.

Wetangula has since hinted at going it alone in the approaching 2022 presidential elections.
