Former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo has thrown his weight behind a referendum push aimed at reducing the number of elective seats.

Expressing his support for a campaign dubbed 'Punguza Mizigo', Kabogo observed that a heavy burden was hanging over the shoulders of Kenyans and called for a speedy change of the Constitution.

In a tweet on Friday, the former county boss warned that the country stares at a 'catastrophe' if the referendum is not held before the next election to free Kenyans from the yoke of over-representation in Parliament.

"Punguza we must lest we all sink as a nation. What and how we do in the next two years will have either a very positive effect on our country or catastrophe will befall us," Kabogo posted.

The 'Punguza Mzigo' initiative is being fronted by 2017 presidential contender Ekuru Aukot who a week ago announced that he had already collected over 600,000 signatures from Kenyans endorsing the constitutional amendments.

“The constitution, under Article 257, requires a million endorsements to begin to spur the process of referendum. Punguza Mizigo is about lessening the burden on Kenyans and reducing the cost of running government,” Aukot said.

The Thirdway Alliance party leader said he was keenly following the guidelines issued by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) over the exercise and expressed optimism that his push will be realised as it had received massive backing from Kenyans countrywide.
