According to Turbo Sub-County Police Commander Eliud Maiyo who lead the exercise, the drivers were driving unroadworthy vehicles which is contrary to the traffic rules.

He says they have also impounded 16 matatus over their road unworthiness nature.

“Police together with NTSA and inspection officials conducted a crackdown on the busy Eldoret-Iten road and we managed to arrest 16 matatu drivers who have been taken to court to face charges of driving un-roadworthy vehicles,” said Maiyo.

Maiyo who spoke to the press during the exercise on Thursday said the vehicles have various traffic offences such as not having speed governors, seatbelts while some drivers did not have driving licences.

Maiyo said their aim is to ensure that families celebrate Christmas without accidents being reported.

“After impounding the vehicles, number plates of the un-roadworthy vehicles are removed and drivers are taken to court, thereafter, inspection by NTSA will determine whether the vehicle is fit to go back to the road or not,” Maiyo added.

He further said the exercise will continue.
