The swearing in of newly elected Moi University Students Organization (MUSO) leaders at the school’s students centre on Tuesday was marred with chaos after a section of the delegates refused to be sworn in.
According to one of the student leaders who requested for anonymity, the confusion erupted after it was suggested for the delegates to be sworn in as a group.
“There was a confusion that they are sworn in as a group while the arrangement as planned was to swear them in individually. The miscommunication brought about the tension that saw us waste a lot of time in the process,” the student leader stated.
Initially, it had been arranged for the delegates to be sworn in traditionally where each delegate was to be sworn in individually.
It was not just the issue of being sworn in as a group that led to the refusal as the delegates were also against the idea of the Students Governing Council (SGC) being sworn in first.
“The legal officer wanted to swear in SGC first and then swear in the delegates. So they refused as they wanted the delegates to be sworn in first then followed by SGC,” popular journalist Ramadhan Omar from Rami TV who was covering the election noted.
The delegates were finally sworn in as per electoral college as time was running out.
