Here are some of the top politicians from the lakeside region and their Luo nicknames;

1. Raila Odinga

The opposition leader enjoys a number of nicknames, most of which emanate from his long political tenure, his political moves and general appearance.

He is known as Jakom (Chairman), because of his placement at the top of the Luo Nyanza political scene and Agwambo (unpredictable) due to his complicated mode of politicking.

He is also known as RAO which despite translating to the initials of his Raila Amollo Odinga name, also translates to 'hippo' in Luo language.

2. Cyprian Awiti

The Homabay Governor is also very old on the political arena and has been featured in many Luo songs for always managing to stick around.

He has since been nicknamed 'Jamawego' (the man from Mawego), which is his village of birth within the very same county.

Others call him 'Rabolo idho tek', which translates to 'the unclimbable banana tree', due to his undefeatable nature and tendency to win each and every political race he participates in.

3. Millie Odhiambo

The Mbita parliamentarian falls among the most vocal female parliamentarians in not only the Luo Nyanza region but also the entire nation.

Back in her Suba backyard and Luo Nyanza, she is called Amilo Gesagesa, with the Amilo being the Luo version of her first name Millie and Gesagesa translating to 'the best of the best'.
