Last year, Raila openly criticized Matiang'i over excessive force by the police in quelling demonstrations.

"Matiang'i is just a small person and I will not waste my energy in responding to him," said Raila when Matiang'i threatened to have him arrested.

But the friendship between the duo may have substantially improved if at all their recent relationship is anything to go by.

In August, Matiang'i labelled Raila a statesman during Henry Obwocha's funeral and even used the term 'Prime Minister' instead of 'former' further raising eyebrows.

"In our midst is Prime Minister Raila Odinga, a statesman and friend to the family. It's my humble duty to invite him to speak to us," said Matiang'i.

And the developing closeness between the duo was again at center stage on Saturday when Matiang'i accompanied Raila to the wedding of Khalid Jamah, a son to former Garissa Governor Nadhif Jama.

It was one of rare functions Matiang'i joined opposition leaders in a private functions.

Mr. Khalid married sister to Suna East MP Junet Mohammed, Ms. Nasra Sheikh Nur Mohammed.

Analysts relate Matiang'i improving relationship with Raila to 2022 Nyamira gubernatorial race.

"Raila is still popular in Gusii and for one to succeed, you need to work with him. Matiang'i is not an exception," said Gideon Mamboleo, a political analyst.

Should Matiang'i join the ODM leader, the race to succeed Governor John Nyagarama could be complicated since ODM treasurer Timothy Bosire is also said to be interested.

Since 2013, Matiang'i has been a pillar in president Uhuru Kenyatta's government and is considered as a 'super minister' due to indelible mark he has left in all ministries the has served.
