Mr Moi, the eldest son of retired President Daniel Moi, succumbed to Pancreatic Cancer on Saturday at Mediheal Hospital in Nakuru. The family has since asked members of the public to give them time to mourn privately.

When contacted, Ms Mulwa, a niece to former Cabinet Minister Nyiva Mwenda, said she was not ready to issue any statement. The two had two children together before falling out.

“I can’t talk about him now. You need to give us time," Ms Mulwa told Sunday Nation.

“Jonathan will be remembered for his daring exploits in the racing tracks, in muddy and dusty tracks, during this time of Easter,” said Baringo Senator Gideon Moi in a statement.

Whereas he has been eulogised as a sportsman and genial “happy-go-lucky guy”, as his friend former MP and businessman Cyrus Jirongo described him, he died with question marks over the mysterious murder of Julie Ward, a young British tourist, more than 30 years ago.

Julie Ward's father Mr John Ward, in an interview with Nairobi Law Monthly in 2012, accused Jonathan of raping and murdering the wildlife photographer at Maasai Mara. But in a later interview, Mr Moi denied the allegations.

“I am totally shocked to hear this," Jonathan told the Star at the time. "I had no relationship with the said lady and I didn’t even know her. I never did such a thing and it has never crossed my mind to do it.”

Mr Moi joined Safari rally sport in 1986 and retired 11 years later. During his sparkling career, he bagged over 800 medals. He unsuccessfully contested the Eldama Ravine parliamentary seat in 2002.
