The Friday incident left many in shock.

Residents claimed that the officer by the name Boaz Ngeno attached to Nyakoe police station has been collecting bribes in the village.

“Ngeno is a chang’aa addict who comes to drink with us. He came and demanded Sh1,000 from Marisela Onyuri who sells chang’aa failure to which he will arrest her. We roughed him up, beat him and chased him away,” said Fredrick Machoni who frequents the chang'aa den.

Machoni said this was not the first time the officer was collecting a bribe from Onyuri. He wondered why he would ask for a bribe yet he is on monthly payment by the government.

Area assistant chief, Simon Mbwayo said his efforts to end the brewing and selling of chang’aa in the village have been frustrated by police officers who collect bribes from chang’aa dealers.

“I was informed about the incident by villagers who witnessed the scuffle between the officer and the drunkards. I hope Nyakoe police boss will take the necessary action against the officer,” he said.

Caleb Wesa, who is Nyakoe's police boss said the matter is being investigated and disciplinary measures will be taken against the officer.

“We are investigating the officer’s behaviour since it is in the public domain. I will not give further details on the discipline to be carried out,” he said.

He warned members of the public against drinking illicit brews saying the law will catch up with them soon.
