Kenya Night-runners Association chairman Jack Songo has shown displeasure in the In-door Residual Spraying (IRS) of mosquitos, scheduled to take place in Migori and Homa-bay counties.

Speaking to Hivisasa on phone, Songo noted that the chemicals used in a similar exercise last year resulted in 'serious casualties'.

Attributing it to negligence by the officers undertaking the exercise to listen to their views, the chairman said that their 'tools of trade', which include an owl and a squirrel ended up dead as a result.

"We received a lot of casualties in the previous exercise and may not want to suffer the consequences of the same. Some of the paraphernalia we use are so hard to get that we cannot allow more casualties this time round." he said.

The night-runners chairman said they are comfortable living with the mosquitoes in their homes since the government has already provided mosquito nets as an alternative to the chemicals.

“We are not going to allow those people into our houses owing to what we encountered last time. After all, this exercise should be directed to bushes as that is where mosquitoes live and let our homes be," he added.

However, authorities are yet to respond to the allegations as efforts by Hivisasa to reach the area OCPD were futile.
