For five years now, Gichana has remained in Arusha prison with authorities unable to prove money laundering and fraud charges.

But social media users could not buy Raila's Saturday excuse, accusing him of betrayal.

"He has always told us about freedom and it is now five years. All he preaches is handshake. We no longer want him," said Peter Omwoyo on #Freedonbosco.

Another user Carol Kwamboka said: " Raila should come out clean. He is fond of betraying those who help him. He can't take all these years without pushing for Gichana's release."

And some threatened to 'teach Raila a lesson' over Bosco's woes should he fail to secure his freedom.

"He has the power to handle the matter and it worries me why take us in cycles. We shall punish him on ballot," said Stephen Manaseh.

Mr. Gichana was Raila's chief campaigner in Kisii and Nyamira Counties in 2007 and was credited for donating the famous Hammer for campaigns.

His detention, which is taking a political angle, has taken Raila's team by storm with the former PM promising to handle the matter when he visited on Friday.
