In a blistering tweet on Saturday, Mr Gathara hit out at President Uhuru Kenyatta and officials in his administration over what he called a cover-up.

He wondered why the media was not asking tough questions about what really transpired in the terror attack that plunged the country into a state of shock.

"That clearly implicates the President and his mandarins in a cover-up. It was criminality, not just incompetence, on show at #Westgate. But these are the sorts of stories KE media is happy to let die while, blind to the irony, it reproduces US media investigations into Trump," the tweet read.

Today marked the sixth anniversary of the deadly attack that claimed the lives of at least 67 people.

Questions still remain on how the suspected Al-Shabaab militants were able to plan and execute the terror attack.

The Westgate mall attack hit global headlines with other countries showing solidarity with Kenya.

In another tweet, Gathara asked why no senior government official was prosecuted in a court of law over the attack.

"Dear Kenyans, today's a good day to ask why, 6 years later, no senior figure has been prosecuted over #Westgate. Why till today there's been no official telling of what took place for 4 days in that mall. Why all the in-depth stories about it are done by foreign journalists," the tweet read.
