A delegation of Senate Speaker Kenneth Lusaka and Council of Governor's chair Wycliffe Oparanya failed to meet retired President Daniel Moi in Kabarak on Friday.
The team comprising of Lusaka, Oparanya, Senators James Orengo and Susan Kihika along with Baringo Governor Stanley Kiptis were reportedly denied opportunity to meet the retired president.
Sources claim that Baringo Senator Gideon Moi, whom the team had visited to condole with, was uncomfortable with the inclusion of Mr Kiptis and Ms Kihika in the list, given their open support on DP William Ruto.
Both Ruto and Gideon have been at loggerheads in the recent months and have since declared interest to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta who retires in 2022. On Wednesday, Ruto opted to visit Jonathan Moi's home in Kabimoi.
"Condoled with the Moi family following the passing on of Jonathan Moi. JT was a great pillar in the family and touched many peoples' hearts with exemplary humility and civility. May the Lord give the family peace and comfort during this time of mourning and remembrance," Orengo said after visiting.
President Uhuru Kenyatta, former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, Chief Justice David Maraga, COTU boss Francis Atwoli and former presidential aspirant Peter Kenneth have both visited Moi to condole with him following Jonathan's death.
Early this week, the family said mourners would not be allowed to visit the ageing former president. They did not however give reasons to the position. Jonathan will be buried on Saturday at Kabimoi.
"The family with heavy hearts wishes to inform all our friends that our patriarch Mzee Moi may not be able to personally receive those wishing to offer their condolence. This inevitable stand does not in any way lessen our gratitude dear friends. Please understand us," the statement said.
The delegation only held talks with Senator Moi, who had received them. It's not clear why a section of leaders are allowed to condole in person with Moi while others are not.
