Trans Nzoia Ford Kenya youth leader Nalianya Simiyu said Mr Wetangula was holed up in a closed-door meeting with Ford Kenya leaders from Nairobi County after arriving at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

"Congratulations Team Nairobi for the warm welcome you accorded our PARTY LEADER and Senator Hon Moses Wetangula at JKA when he arrived in the Country this morning from Hong Ngong," he wrote on Facebook.

"The meeting had nothing to do with fake gold. The party leader is innocent just like Raila Odinga. He will write a statement if called by the police officers," added Simiyu in a response to one of questions.

With Wetangula's name dragged into the fake gold scandal, Raila Odinga, whose name has been dragged as well, on Friday maintained that he was only a whistleblower.

“I told the royal ruler that the voice he heard on phone was not that of the minister. I know Matiang’i’s voice and the callers were simply using it to advance their agenda,” said Mr Odinga.

DCI George Kinoti last week said Mr Wetangula is a person of interest. He said that he will be summoned for grilling over the fake gold scam in which a Dubai Royal lost over Sh400 million.

“He is a person of interest, and we shall be interrogating him and all others mentioned to determine their degree of involvement,” Mr Kinoti said.

It was not immediately established why Mr Wetangula chose to meet Nairobi leaders for several hours at JKIA. Also present was MP Ferdinand Wanyonyi.
