The demolition that was set for Thursday (30 August 2018) failed to take place.

The multi-agency team leading the demolitions on riparian land in the city said that the destruction had been postponed to Monday next week.

Chief Inspector Julius Wanjau told journalists that the postponement was necessary to allow the team time to complete flattening the buildings it demolished two weeks ago.

A section of Nairobians reacted differently to the postponement:

“Governor Mike Sonko and the multi-agency team should not play double standards on demolitions,” Benson Kanji said.

Kanji said that all buildings constructed on riparian land or road reserve should go down.

He said that the team issued a two weeks’ notice to tenants that the building has to come down.

“Why did they issue a two weeks’ notice and later again come and postpone the demolition, we are watching them,” Cecilia Wanjiku, a trader said.

Wanjiku said that tenants had hurriedly chased out of the building with a notice of demolition.

“The government should leave the building to stand instead of scaring people with demolition threats,” Richard Mburu said.

A spot check on of the building reveals that tenants have vacated.

On Wednesday, some tenants who were rushing to vacate the building complained that their businesses had been ruined.
