The party has been standing on shaky grounds lately, following a storm that was initiated by former Vice Chair David Murathe last week.

The latter threatened to engineer a mass walkout from the party to prevent Deputy President William Ruto's presidency.

And as things stand now, he could do it thanks to the emergence of two factions, one nicknamed Tangatanga, which is in favour of Ruto and the other named 'Kitaeleweka'.

Kitaeleweka consists anti-Ruto campaigners who are opposed to the thought of him automatically flying the party flag to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta in the 2022 polls.

On the other hand, Tangatanga is in support of Ruto and his routine rounds across the nation, hence the 'tangatanga' title which translates to 'roaming' in Swahili.

Kitaeleweka, according to the Daily Nation, is led by Nyeri Town lawmaker Ngunjiri Wambugu.

His followers include his Gatundu South counterpart Moses Kuria and Muranga Governor Mwangi Wa Iria.

The group also enjoys the backing of Central Kenya veteran politician's who lost their bids in the 2017 elections and are accusing Ruto of engineering their losses.

They include former Gatanga lawmaker Peter Kenneth, Kiambu Governor William Kabogo and former Mukurweini Member of Parliament Kabando Wa Kabando.

The group is opposed to the continued politicking being done by Ruto's allies and are calling for political calm as has been requested by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

It is also said to enjoy the backing of strong associates of Uhuru who feel that the activities in Ruto's camp are undermining the President and his development agenda.
