The student, Esylovians Meli, had alleged that her boyfriend Marcus Rodriguez  was of Australian nationality.

However, the Australian High Commission in Kenya has since issued a statement saying no Australian citizen died during the attack.

“The Australian High Commission in Nairobi has confirmed that an individual reported by some media as an Australian victim of the attack on the DusitD2 Hotel complex was not an Australian citizen,” the statement reads in part.

Just hours after the attack, Esylovians, who is a third year student claimed her 36-year-old boyfriend had checked into the hotel on Sunday after arriving from Australia.

The Tuesday attack that the Al Shabaab terrorist group has since claimed responsibility saw at least 21 people die while over 700 survivors were rescued by a joint operation by Kenyan forces.
