The new development comes after Kenya power barred the parties from conducting business on their behalf after increased billing fraud threatened its existence.  

Chief executive Jared Othieno has now ordered all those who want to purchase tokens to do so through mobile pay bill numbers and not vendors after the saga, which saw the company make massive losses.  

The new platform has now effectively locked out all the vendors using underhand tactics to make wealth at the end of the day.

 “To avoid potential loss through fraud, we wish to request our clients to only buy their tokens or settle their bills through authorised channels, and in particular through M-Pesa Paybill numbers 888880 and 888888 for pre-paid services and post-paid services respectively,” he said, as quoted by Standard.

He, however, did not explain whether consumers who have brought tokens without their knowledge will be paid for the same. Kenyans have already started to elicit mixed reactions following the new move by the energy provider.

The firm established that some unsuspected buyers acquired the tokens from vendors without knowing the danger they were getting themselves into.

Consumer Federation of Kenya (Cofek) has also opposed the move. The federation has now asked the energy supplier to reconsider the move.
