The country's second in command came with good tidings when he came calling on Friday.

After an appeal from the primary school's headteacher, the DP said that he would ensure that money is pumped into a feeding programme in the public school.

The programme will see the pupils given food on a daily basis.

He made an announcement after being told that scores of the children were missing school because of hunger.

"I will make arrangements so that the children will not study on empty stomachs. We will make arrangements for them so that when they come to school, they will find food (Nitaenda niweke mpango ili watoto wasisome na njaa. Tutawafanyia mpango kila siku wakija shuleni watakuta kuna chakula)," the deputy president said.

The pupils broke out in jubilation after the deputy president made the announcement.

DP Ruto recounted how a few years ago the school was nearly closed because of filthy latrines but the government came to its rescue and constructed better latrines.

Dandora is a low-income settlement where scores of families struggle with feeding their children, forcing them to miss school.
