It has emerged that politician Tom Mboya was a rich man at a young age, and never shied away from showing off his property.
In a historical piece published on Daily Nation by Fitz De Souza, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta's former lawyer, so rich was Mboya that he would buy a new Mercedes Benz every year.
De Souza reveals that Mboya would go around the city hooting and showing off his new rides to everyone after buying them.
He says that though wealth was hidden by many people at the time, years before independence, members of the Luo communities saw no harm in boasting of their wealth.
De Souza also said the same was the case on the side of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, who would later become the Vice President, and whose richness was not a secret.
"I remember thinking that in other communities, this would be a minus point. I then met other Luos who tried to tell me how rich Odinga was. I suddenly understood why Tom Mboya had bought a Mercedes Benz and went around hooting and showing it to everyone, and every year he would buy a new one," De Souza said in part of the Daily Nation piece.
He would later establish that Oginga was being bankrolled by the Soviets and the Chinese and Mboya by the United States.
Ironically, the two were not in good terms, despite the Suba, Mboya's community, who are considered largely Luos, having been totally assimilated by the Luos.
