Confirming the incident, Embu North sub-county Police Commander Godfrey Kere said that the trio was found in Manyatta Market after the residents tipped off the police.

The detectives took the suspects to the Manyatta Police Station where they were interrogated.

The police boss said that the residents are highly vulnerable because they are not aware of the features of the new notes, which makes it difficult for them to identify them.

The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) Governor Patrick Njoroge has since warned the general public to beware of con artists who are likely to take advantage of the news notes to fleece them.

He asked Kenyans to be vigilant whenever they are examining the features of the new notes so that they do not become victims of circumstances in the long run.

CBK has given Kenyans until October 1 to exchange old Sh1,000 notes to get new ones before they are phased out.
