Speaking on Wednesday, the county boss claimed that the region is willing to rally behind Raila in the 2022 polls, remarks that have been interpreted as an attempt to sell his ideologies to residents of the Central Kenya region.

However, speaking on Saturday, Senator Mwaura noted that he attempted the very same thing for ten years but failed terribly, arguing that the same could also befall Waiguru.

"About the Waiguru issue, I attempted to sell Raila in Central Kenya for ten years in futility. It's very hard (Hii mambo ya Waiguru, mimi nilijaribu kuuza Raila Central kwa miaka kumi nikashindwa, ni vigumu sana)," said the former Raila ally.

The leader who decamped to the Jubilee Party ahead of the 2017 polls and proceeded to secure a nomination slot made the remarks on Radio Jambo's Mazungumzo Waziwazi show.

He claimed that the region remains almost fully in support of Deputy President William Ruto, Raila's leading rival and possible chief competitor in the 2022 presidential elections.

According to Mwaura, Ruto enjoys about 80 per cent backing in the region, which makes it almost impossible to rally support for Raila in the remaining three years.

"I've heard that area locals are fully in his support. I've heard that he enjoys 80 per cent support (Nimesikia watu wa huko wanakufa na Ruto, naskia support yake ni 80 per cent)," he added.

Raila is yet to react to Waiguru's remarks.
